BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥 The 欧美视频 Department of Music will present the Wind Symphony and the University Band in concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 25, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.
The concert, which is free and open to the public, will feature works by Whitacre, Ticheli and Jacob performed by the Wind Symphony, as well as music by Bach, Kopetz, Gershwin, Grundman, Barnes and Lithgow to be performed by the University Band.
鈥淭his performance features music by a variety of composers with many solo opportunities for our students,鈥 said Dr. Brian Hopwood, professor of music and director of instrumental studies.
The concert will open with the University Band, which is in its sixth year of performing. The ensemble consists of students from many disciplines across campus, community members, music majors performing on secondary instruments. The ensemble is led by Hopwood along with music education majors, Cameron Collins and Chantel Biddinger.
Performing their final concert at 欧美视频, five senior Wind Symphony members will perform as guest soloists with the University Band on John Krance鈥檚 arrangement of George Gershwin鈥檚 鈥淪econd Prelude鈥 from his 鈥淭hree Preludes鈥 for piano 鈥 Schuyler Czech, flute; Caroline Parker, clarinet; Dylan Pich, alto saxophone; Austin Bryant, trombone; and Austin Hicks, tuba.
The Wind Symphony, 欧美视频鈥檚 premier instrumental ensemble, will open with Eric Whitacre鈥檚 raucous opera-buffa-style overture 鈥淣oisy Wheels of Joy.鈥 Also on the program is 鈥淎n American Elegy鈥 by Frank Ticheli. Commissioned for the Columbine High School Band of Littleton, Colo., this musical work was written in remembrance of the shooting tragedy at the school in April 1999. The ensemble also will perform the band classic 鈥淲illiam Byrd Suite,鈥 written 96 years ago by Gordon Jacob for the tercentenary of Byrd鈥檚 death. The six-movement work is an arrangement of six keyboard pieces from Byrd鈥檚 鈥淔itzwilliam Virginal Book.鈥
