BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥 The 欧美视频 Department of Music will present 鈥淎 Potpourri of Wind Music鈥 at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Oct. 4, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.
The 欧美视频 Wind Symphony, along with compositions performed by woodwind, brass and percussion chamber groups, will feature works by Schostakovich, Dello Joio, Whitacre and Chance.
The Wind Symphony music for this performance depicts a variety of styles and emotions. Two works by Shostakovich serve as 鈥渂ookends,鈥 opening with the light and effervescent 鈥淒ance I鈥 from Jazz Suite no. 2 and concluding with 鈥淔olk Dances,鈥 a collection of Russian folk songs combined into one composition.
Dello Joio鈥檚 鈥淪cenes from 鈥楾he Louvre鈥欌 covers the period of the famous Paris museum鈥檚 development during the Renaissance with music based on themes from composers of that period. 鈥淥ctober鈥 is a composition intended to evoke a serene and peaceful musical representation of the composer鈥檚 favorite month.
鈥淪omething about the crisp autumn air and the subtle changes in light always make me a little sentimental, and as I started to sketch I felt that same quiet beauty in the writing,鈥 composer Eric Whitacre writes.
Also on the program, which is free and open to the public, is 鈥淚ncantation and Dance,鈥 the band composition written by John Barnes Chance while he was composer-in-residence with the Ford Foundation Young Composers Project in 1960.
