Wehmeyer to perform faculty recital on euphonium

BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥 The 欧美视频 Department of Music will present Dr. Terri Wehmeyer on euphonium in a faculty recital at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 11, in the Jane A. Meyer Recital Hall.

Dr. Terri Wehmeyer will present a faculty recital on euphonium on April 11.Works from different historical eras and in a variety of musical styles will be presented. Featured composers include Alessandro Besozzi, Neal Corwell, David Gillingham, Felix Mendelssohn and Lewis J. Buckley.

Besides a traditional Baroque sonata and an arrangement of a set of Romantic composer Felix Mendelssohn鈥檚 piano pieces for euphonium, the recital includes more modern music as well. According to Wehmeyer, Neal Corwell鈥檚 piece 鈥淪imyeh鈥 presents themes derived from transcriptions of tribal songs of the Blackfeet tribe of which Simyeh was a member.

In his program notes, Corwell states that 鈥溾楽imyeh鈥 is intended as a tribute to the proud and dignified traditions of the Blackfeet tribe;鈥 and is 鈥渘ot an attempt to recreate authentic native American music.鈥 The pre-recorded accompaniment includes sounds such as a native vessel flute and a variety of percussion instruments, as well as some synthesized electronic elements.

Another work Wehmeyer will feature is 鈥淏lue Lake Fantasies,鈥 written in 1995 by American composer David Gillingham. Gillingham says the five-movement suite 鈥渟eeks to exploit both the technical facility, as well as the lyrical quality of the instrument.鈥

鈥淭he piece requires many modern techniques from the euphoniumist including multiphonics, where he or she hums while playing the instrument, thus sounding an entire chord simultaneously,鈥 said Wehmeyer, who will be accompanied by Dr. Melinda Smashey Jones on piano.

The recital, which is free and open to the public, will close with a set of variations on the well-known tune 鈥淭he Yellow Rose of Texas.鈥

Wehmeyer, a native of Magnolia, Ark., earned a doctor of musical arts degree in euphonium performance and a master of music in music history and literature from the University of Missouri-Kansas City. She also holds an M.M. in euphonium performance from Northwestern State University of Louisiana and a B.M.E. in instrumental music from Ouachita Baptist University. As a performer, Wehmeyer has won numerous regional and state awards and was a founding member of the award-winning Fountain City Brass Band in Kansas City. She continues to perform solo recitals, masterclasses and chamber music throughout the South and Midwest.
