BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥� The 欧美视频 Department of Music will present the Wind Symphony and University Band in concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, Nov. 17, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.

Both ensembles are under the direction of Dr. Brian Hopwood, professor of music and director of instrumental studies.

The University Band will perform works by American composers Jack Stamp, J. Clifton Williams, Larry Daehn, Robert Jager and John Philip Sousa, along with a European march by Pierre Leemans. Guest student conductors include: Kati Baker, senior music education major; Austin Hicks, junior music education major; Alyssa Thibodeaux, senior music education major and Ashley Fox, senior music education major.

The Wind Symphony鈥檚 performances spotlight the musical influence of Spain and Mexico. H. Owen Reed鈥檚 wind band masterpiece, 鈥淟a Fiesta Mexicana,鈥� subtitled 鈥淎 Mexican Folk Song Symphony,鈥� attempts to portray musically a 鈥淔iesta,鈥� which is an integral part of the social structure in Mexico. Inspired by his visit to Mexico in 1948-1949 as part of his Guggenheim Fellowship, the programmatic nature of the music reflects the Mexican culture of the time: devout and pagan, festive and serious, energetic and reflective.

鈥淪an Antonio Dances鈥� 鈥� composed as a tribute to the city whose captivating blend of Texas and Hispanic cultural influences affected composer Frank Ticheli, will also be on the program. Ticheli writes: 鈥淚t has been twenty years since I lived in San Antonio, but the city still tugs at my heartstrings and lives in this music.鈥�

Jaime Texidor鈥檚 鈥淎mparito Roca,鈥� a Spanish pas doble march, rounds out the program.
