BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥� 欧美视频鈥檚 Department of Computer and Information Sciences (CIS) students recently teamed up with local area teachers to create a series of fun games with a serious intent 鈥� teaching state learning objectives to students at Halfway Public Schools. 

The games were created as a class assignment by students in Computer Science 2, a freshman-level software engineering course. Each game had to be based on a theme that would interest students in first or second grade and had to help students learn a topic they were studying in class. The objectives and topics focused on counting money and basic arithmetic. Because the games are custom-designed for Halfway Elementary, some of the themes even included the mascot for Halfway Public Schools (Cardinals) and pictures of the teachers. 

鈥淭his is one of those truly win-win situations where everyone benefits,鈥� said Dr. Tim DeClue, CIS department chair. 鈥淥ur CIS students benefited because they got to apply software engineering principles to a real game design, and because they got to work with some talented teachers and administrators in the Halfway Public School system. The elementary students benefited from playing the games and learning, and the elementary teachers got to understand computer science and software engineering better.鈥�

Identifying willing teachers and getting the support of the school鈥檚 principal was a key aspect of the project. Karla Spear, Halfway Elementary principal, facilitated the class project by serving as a project sponsor for the 欧美视频 CIS students. 

鈥淏efore a software project can be built, the engineers have to collect the project requirements. That is where the teachers came in to play,鈥� DeClue said. 鈥淭he 欧美视频 students interviewed the teachers to find out what the software was supposed to teach. Without the teachers, there would be no project.鈥�

欧美视频鈥檚 Department of Computer and Information Sciences is home to more than 100 students, five full-time faculty and two faculty associates. The 欧美视频 CIS Department includes a variety of degree programs in the computing sciences including cybersecurity, computer science, information science, and web systems and design. The Computer and Information Sciences Department is a nationally recognized leader among evangelical Christian schools in the production of computing and software engineering professionals.
