BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥� The Department of Music of 欧美视频 will present its annual Masterworks Concert at 7:30 p.m. Friday, May 3, in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.

Conducted by Dr. James R. Tarrant, director of choral studies and professor of music at 欧美视频, the Masterworks Chorus and Winds will present Johann Sebastian Bach鈥檚 鈥淢agnificat鈥� (BWV 243) and 鈥淲achet auf鈥� (BWV 140).

鈥淭hese are two of Bach鈥檚 most-performed works in the world today,鈥� Tarrant said. 鈥淭hey are significant in terms of their value to art and sacred music and are quintessentially Bach.鈥�

The concert will feature prominent professional soloists from the region, performing with the massed choir and orchestra, including: Stephen Bomgardner, Chris Thompson, Ann Marie Daehn, Paula K. Patterson and Traci Pritchard.

Stephen Bomgardner, tenor, combines an active singing career with a full-time teaching career. In oratorio and concert works, he has performed as tenor soloist in 35 different works from Bach to Britten. Actively performing with Springfield Opera, his character repertoire includes 36 different roles. He is professor of music and chair of the Department of Fine and Performing Arts at Drury University. He holds the D.M.A. from Boston University, the M.M. from Rice University, and the B.M. from Fort Hays State University.

Chris Thompson, bass, is an international artist noted for compelling performances on stage and in the concert hall. A strong advocate of new music, Thompson made his Carnegie Hall debut singing 鈥淧osh,鈥� a song cycle by composer Mohammed Fairouz, and played Daniel Keane in the Off-Broadway musical 鈥淔ermat鈥檚 Last Tango鈥� at New York City鈥檚 York Theatre. His performances have been featured on recording labels such as: Naxos, Original Cast Recordings, Albany Records, Koch-Schwann, and Novana Records. Thompson is a graduate of the University of Kansas, the Guildhall School of Music and Drama (London), Loyola University, and Kansas State University. He serves as professor of music at Missouri State University.

Mezzo soprano Ann Marie Wilcox-Daehn thrives on a performing career that includes oratorio, opera, art song, and musical theater. Internationally, she continues to perform in solo recitals, most recently in Italy and China. Her collaboration with pianist Dr. Elizabeth Avery earned the pair the Ernst Bacon American Prize for their performance of songs by Sergius Kagen. Dr. Wilcox-Daehn currently is an associate professor of voice and directs the opera program at Missouri State University. She serves as the Central Region Governor for the National Opera Association and is a member of Equity and AGMA.

Paula K. Patterson, mezzo soprano, has performed more than 30 roles in opera, operetta, and musical theatre. Dr. Patterson is well-known to audiences in southwest Missouri through her work in opera, theater, oratorio, and recitals. Opera companies with whom she has sung include the Spanish National Opera in Madrid; San Diego Opera; Des Moines Metro Opera; Ohio Light Opera; Texas Opera Theatre, Houston; Opera Carolina; and Heartland Opera Theater, Joplin. She was a regional finalist and education grant recipient of the Metropolitan Opera auditions. She completed a Masters of Music in Vocal Performance from the University of Texas-Austin and a doctorate at the University of Missouri. She is currently an associate professor of voice and assistant music department head at Missouri State University.

Soprano Traci Pritchard has been described as an expressive, 鈥済olden-voiced鈥� soprano (Springfield News-Leader) who is known for her interpretation of Mozart roles. Her most-recent opera performance was with Opera Breve in New York City as Michaela in Bizet鈥檚 鈥淐armen.鈥� In 2013, Pritchard was selected as a Professional Fellow by SongFest, the United States鈥� premier art song festival and training program in Los Angeles, where she was a featured soloist on the songs of Rachmaninov, Liszt, Lilli Boulanger, and Duparc. Pritchard holds the B.S. in vocal music with performer鈥檚 certificate from 欧美视频, and the M.M. in vocal performance from Missouri State University. 

鈥淭o hear this ensemble of the area鈥檚 finest soloists will be a real delight for the audience,鈥� Tarrant said. 

For more than 50 years, the Masterworks concert has brought to the stage major musical works for chorus and orchestra. The Masterworks presentation annually provides southwest Missouri audiences the opportunity to experience musical works that are best presented by the combined efforts of department, university and community. The repertoire has included the great classics, the unfamiliar pearls and modern compositions of significance.
