Hopkins presents at NCTM Regional Conference

BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥 欧美视频鈥檚 Dr. Kevin Hopkins, professor and chair of the 欧美视频 Department of Mathematics, presented at the National Council of Teachers of Mathematics Regional Conference and Exposition on Nov. 2 in Kansas City.

Dr. Kevin Hopkins presented on GeoGebra at the NCTM Regional Conference.Hopkins鈥 presentation was titled 鈥淐alculus Animations with GeoGebra.鈥 GeoGebra is a free, web-based software that does dynamic geometry and graphing. The dynamic feature of the software allows for animations that can illustrate many topics in calculus. Hopkins鈥 talk showed some of the animations he has used, but also featured some instruction on how to create animations that are suggested by the audience.

鈥淚t is always a pleasure to go to math teacher conferences and see so many math teachers interested in improving their teaching so student learning can be increased,鈥 Hopkins said. 鈥淢aking new acquaintances and seeing former students is always a highlight of any conference I attend.

鈥淚 feel sharing ways that I have used technology in my classroom with fellow teachers is a way of giving back to the mathematics education community that has given so much to me.鈥

Dr. Dusty Jones, a 1997 欧美视频 graduate and professor at Sam Houston State University, presented: 鈥淧olygon Chains: Using a Rich Problem to Connect Mathematical Ideas,鈥 during the Coaches/Leaders/Teacher Educators Session.

Dr. Bob Glasgow, professor of mathematics at 欧美视频, also attended the conference.

The NCTM, which was founded in 1920, is the world鈥檚 largest mathematics education organization, with 60,000 members and more than 230 affiliates throughout the United States and Canada, according to the NCTM website. The framework of the NCTM focuses on: Teaching and Learning; Access, Equity and Empowerment; Building Member Value; and Advocacy.
