欧美视频's Wind Symphony and University Band in concert April 21

BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥 The 欧美视频 Division of Arts and Humanities presents the Wind Symphony and University Band in concert at 7:30 p.m., Thursday, April 21 in Pike Auditorium on the Bolivar campus.

Directed by Jared Brown, the Wind Symphony will open the evening by featuring compositions spanning more than a century of wind band literature.

鈥淎rsenal,鈥 a stately march from Belgian composer Jan Van der Roost, opens the concert, followed by 鈥淭o the Sky,鈥 by American composer James Stephenson. 鈥淔ast Arrows鈥 is a whimsical piece honoring Jaroslav Foglar, writer of the famous Czech comics by the same name. Eric Whitacre鈥檚 鈥淟ux Aurumque鈥 follows with lush, dissonant chords originally based on a choral work. 鈥淥n and American Spiritual鈥 take the listener on an emotional, chaotic, and triumph musical journey based on the spiritual, 鈥淲ere You There.鈥 The exuberant 鈥淪weet Like That鈥 was a collaborative effort between the composer and a group of students, culminating in what the composer describes as 鈥渁n urban march.鈥 The final selection, 鈥淐hicken Chowder,鈥 is an arrangement of a ragtime composition from the early 1900s.

The University Band, under the direction of John Trew, will perform some classic wind band pieces and newer works, as well.

The group will feature the music of well-known composers like Frank Ticheli, Robert W. Smith, Robert Sheldon and an arrangement by James Swearingen. The University Band鈥檚 portion of the concert will begin with an energetic piece called 鈥淵ellow鈥 and then wrap up with a classic march from legendary composer Karl King. Other classics include 鈥淵orkshire Ballad鈥 by James Barnes, and 鈥淎merican Riversongs鈥 by Pierre La Plante.

The performance is free and open to the public. For more information, contact Jared Brown at jrbrown@欧美视频niv.edu or call the 欧美视频 music office at (417) 328-1644.
