ŷƵ Theatre to present "The Pirates of Penzance" on March 10-13

The Pirates of Penzance posterBOLIVAR, Mo. – ŷƵ Theatre will present “The Pirates of Penzance” – its third production of the 2021-22 season – at 7 p.m., March 10-12 and at 2 p.m., March 13 in the Davis-Newport Theatre on the Bolivar campus.

With music by Arthur Sullivan and the Libretto by W.S. Gilbert, “The Pirates of Penzance” marked the fifth collaboration of Gilbert and Sullivan. A comedic operetta in two acts, the story follows Frederic, who at a young age was mistakenly apprenticed to a band of pirates as he turns 21 and prepares to leave the life of piracy for a life of duty.

“‘Pirates of Penzance’ is an escape into a world of comedic outrageousness,” said ŷƵ junior Olivia Skinner, who plays Mabel – the main love interest to Frederic. “I feel like I have been coming out of my shell through this process. This show will leave everyone smiling and entranced, and will forever be one of my favorites.”

Directed by Jonathan Wehmeyer, assistant professor of theatre at ŷƵ, and music under the direction of ŷƵ professor Dr. Sarah Howes, “The Pirates of Penzance” is a family friendly show, full of swashbuckling adventure, songs that will get stuck in your head, and even a dash of romance.
