BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥� Chance Bedell, an interdisciplinary studies major from Odessa, Mo., and Paige Phipps, an athletic training/pre-physical therapy major from Ozark, Mo., won the titles of Mr. and Miss Southwest at the annual pageant on Friday, March 6, at 欧美视频.

Eight candidates were nominated by 欧美视频 faculty and staff and voted upon by the student body for the purpose of selecting a pair of students to represent the Bearcat family for the next year.

This year鈥檚 candidates also included: Lindsey Appleby of Springfield, Mo.; Ashton Hensley of Istanbul, Turkey; Sarah Swainston of Warrensburg, Mo.; Jordan Ashford of St. Louis, Mo.; Trevor Bellmyer of Odessa, Mo.; and Brooks Lucas of Divernon, Ill.

The pageant featured introductory videos and a talent presentation by each candidate, followed by a round of online voting to determine the top four candidates, who then participated in question-and-answer sessions. A final round of voting determined the winners.

During the talent competition, Bedell presented a spoken-word piece sharing his testimony 鈥� his story.

鈥淚 put a lot of time and prayer into thinking about what I wanted to do,鈥� Bedell said. 鈥淚 wanted to use this platform and opportunity to be vulnerable and share my story.

鈥淚 felt called to share my story for a little while now, and I didn't know when the opportunity would arise; maybe Locamente or a chapel session. So, when I found out I was nominated for Mr. Southwest, those opportunities briefly passed my mind. But, I felt that God was leading me to share my story, and hopefully, inspire and help someone else out there who may be going through the same thing.鈥�

Bedell, who plans to pursue his MBA at 欧美视频 after graduation, was honored to be named Mr. Southwest.

鈥淭o represent 欧美视频 鈥� a place that is my home, that has been my home for three years now, and that will continue to be my home for the next two with my MBA approaching, I鈥檓 very excited to represent the school for the next year,鈥� Bedell said.

Phipps鈥� inspiration for her talent portion came from her mom, Jenny.

鈥淔unny story 鈥� it鈥檚 my mom鈥檚 old high school talent show act,鈥� Phipps said of her performance. 鈥淪he definitely was in the crowd, going along with all of the dances. I think she still remembers it.鈥�

Phipps was joined in performing the routine to 鈥淧roud Mary鈥� by several of her friends from the Woody-Gott residence halls.

鈥淚 had basically every girl on my hall, and then a few key people who have been really inspirational in forming who I am at 欧美视频,鈥� Phipps said.

Phipps, who wants to become a NICU physical therapist, was not only happy to be named Miss Southwest but encouraged by the nomination.

鈥淚t鈥檚 really nice hearing from my teachers and faculty that they thought I could do this because I definitely did not ever think about it,鈥� Phipps said. 鈥淚t鈥檒l be so easy to talk about 欧美视频 because it truly is the best university and I came here for a reason. I absolutely have loved it. I鈥檝e grown spiritually, I鈥檝e grown academically and my friend group is amazing.鈥�

This year, Mr. and Miss Southwest 2019 鈥� Parker Hall and Kailee Knudsen 鈥� invited the 2018 Mr. and Miss Southwest, as well as the 2020 candidates to participate in a community service project they hope will continue. The 2020 project was at Service Oriented Aviation Readiness (S.O.A.R.) in Bolivar, a nonprofit corporation whose primary purpose is mission aviation.

The beginnings of the 鈥淢iss Southwest鈥� pageant date back to the 1930s, with 鈥淢r. Southwest鈥� being added in 1963. The pageant, which was organized by the students of 欧美视频鈥檚 University Activities Council, was one of the keynote happenings of Bearcat Days, a visit event in which admitted students considering 欧美视频 attendance were hosted on campus.
