Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµ dominates K.C. Federal Reserve Bank Code-A-Thon

BOLIVAR, Mo. – Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµâ€™s Division of Computing and Mathematics Competitive Programming teams claimed two of the top three spots in the fifth annual Kansas City Federal Reserve Bank’s Code-A-Thon, which was held online Oct. 23-25. 

Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµ Computer Information Science competitive team members.Fifty-one students on 13 teams from seven universities competed for top honors at the event with Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµâ€™s Team White – Andrew Eisenhour (Springfield), Elise O’Banion (Kokomo, Ind.), Drew Ross (Olathe, Kan.), Thomas Schaal (Fayetteville, Ark.) and Coleman Yantis (Joplin) – claiming first place. 

Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµâ€™s Team Black, consisting of Mathew Baldinger (Sedalia), Jenna Cantrell (Mountain Grove), Devon Nelson (Omaha, Neb.), Slate Rehm (Pleasant Hope) and Levi Zustiak (Galena, Kan.), was awarded third-place honors. Drury University finished in second place.

The theme of the competition was COVID-19. Teams were asked to design and build a mobile application to address the challenges COVID-19 has presented to the United States. Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµâ€™s first-place team designed and built a mobile app to help recovering COVID patients regain their sense of smell through biometrics. Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµâ€™s second team entered a mobile app to help accomplish secure voting during the pandemic. The teams are coached by Dr. Tim DeClue, professor of computer science at Å·ÃÀÊÓÆµ.

Other universities represented in the competition included Kansas State University, the University of Missouri-Kansas City, the University of Central Missouri, Truman State University, Drury University and Langston University.
