BOLIVAR, Mo. 鈥� The William and Kathy Brown Guest Artist Series will host a free workshop for music educators conducted by Joyce McCall, Ph.D., from 10:30 a.m-4 p.m., Feb. 8, in the Meyer Recital Hall on 欧美视频鈥檚 Bolivar campus.
The workshop 鈥� 鈥淢inding Cultural Responsiveness in a (Sometimes) Unresponsive Space鈥�
鈥� is designed for music educators of all levels to help equip them to work with students
from diverse cultures. The goals of the workshop are to provoke better understandings
of how and why educational structures continue to endorse and perpetuate inequities
in education and society; and to compile culturally responsive approaches that will
assist educators in confronting inequities in their respective spaces.
McCall, an assistant professor of music education at the University of Illinois, teaches undergraduate and graduate courses including culturally relevant pedagogy, social foundations of music education, transformative topics in music education and jazz methods. Her research centers on race, culture, class and cultural responsiveness. She has presented her research at the College Music Society National Conference, American Educators Research Association, and the National Association for Music Education. Her articles have been published in the 鈥淛ournal of Music Teacher Education鈥� and the 鈥淧ennsylvania Music Educators Association News.鈥�
Attendees are encouraged to request access to the eight journal articles that will be referenced during the workshop before Feb. 8. Please contact the music office for access: music@sbuniv.edu.
In addition, attendees have the option to earn one hour of graduate credit from 欧美视频 for a $145 course fee.
